Terry put up a new message. RSS feed is broken. Looked at the support forum, looks like an ongoing ticket from last week. Will watch this thread: http://forum.activecollab.com/viewtopic.php?id=679
Found an interesting reference to a new, open-source project management/collaboration software on Sunday: http://www.activecollab.com/ Currently in beta, I am installing their first release candidate.
The website doesn’t really explain all of the functions (which is why I want to install it, curiosity and cats and all that) but they have a list for the upcoming version 1 here: http://forum.activecollab.com/viewtopic.php?id=202
Shows a simple install, so I threw it up on my Bluehost site and gave it a go. Unfortunately, I was running php4 and it required php5. So much for that.
But, I discovered Bluehost will upgrade you to php5 by moving you to a new server. I emailed their support and by Monday we had settled on making the move. They warned me I would have a 24 hour downtime.
I didn’t hear anything and never noticed any downtime, but today I checked and phpmyadmin shows php5, so I am ready to go.
Install
I uploaded the files via ftp and logged into the install folder. Step 1 was just some info and Step 2 gave me all checks for the system requirements. Life looks good. Well, maybe not.
Step 3 asks for database info, including username and password. This took awhile. Maybe 20 minutes. In the end, I discovered I was reading the database name incorrectly. I was reading it as namename and it should have been name_namename. Once that was corrected, I swas up and running again.
Step 4 tells me to set up my admin account. No problem there.
Install complete, took around 45 minutes including the ftp of the system files.
Admin functions
Started with adding users. Figured to add the whole CTLT bunch and anyone can play with this. Nice setup. You can assign a timezone to each user and the system will generate a random password for each individual. That is very nice.
Did realize after I created most of the accounts that I should have made everyone an admin. Had to go back in and change those.
Created a test project and assigned everyone. Nice, simple list of checkboxes to assign users.
The project interface doesn’t immediately show you how to use it. But, I do see messages, task lists, milestones and file uploads. Certainly the meat of any project management requirements. Should allow for great communication. Also, an RSS feed to keep up with changes. A nice touch to help keep track of project updates.
Project is up with all users. Total time required was probably a bit less than 30 minutes. Looks good so far.
