Creating Smoke in Photoshop tutorial

Creating Smoke tutorial

Nice tutorial for creating 2D smoke. I had to work around it a bit to get it right. In the end, I like the inner glow I was able to create. Gives the smoke a luminosity and depth.

Mac OS X: How to mount a Windows shared folder on your Mac - Lifehacker

Mac OS X: How to access a Mac’s files on your PC - Lifehacker

As the owner of both a Macbook Pro and a Windows PVR/server it is nice to find basic articles on how to share data between the two.  As always, Lifehacker does a great job of putting together the quick and dirty method in an easy to follow format.  Your system may require a bit more work, but this makes for a great start.

ToonDoo - The Cartoon Strip Creator - Create, Publish, Share, Discuss!

This is a creative idea.  Build photo books from scratch.  One more thing for me to eventually try out.  The site seems a bit slow to load, but we’ve been having some internet access issues since yesterday so I’m not certain what the culprit is: site or our link.

ColorJack: Sphere (Color Theory Visualizer)

This is one of the better online color selection tools I’ve seen.  Something to keep track of when my next design project comes about.

Further proof video is moving to the masses.  A site for family vacation videos.  But, it is nice for individuals to see places that aren’t professionally filmed and edited (though some looked pretty good).

I still think media will begin to become very localized.  Over time, the ability to create media will move to the masses and instead of watching shows about NY, LA and London, we’ll have more options to watch well made (and hopefully well-written) shows about more local locations.

Certainly a nice site to visit and share video through.

Another free font website.  Nice design and seems fairly easy to navigate. Looks to be a bit more than 400 free fonts at this point.  Certainly enough to help designers find something useful for their work.

DVC Learning Style Survey for College

If you like to know your strengths and weaknesses, this could be a useful tool.  Personally, I have a pretty good idea of who I am at this point in life, but it can always be valuable to get some objective information.  Especially since we do tend to change over time.  None of us stay the same throughout life.

I took the test and it came back balanced.  I can expect that type of response since I try to push myself into uncomfortable situations on a regular basis.  Try to locate weaknesses and build up those areas instead of constantly focusing on strengths and attempting to let that effort carry you through more trying methods (or refusing to try them at all).

Take the test, get some info and think a bit.  Always worth a few minutes of your time.

Going with the Wind - Popular Science

This is where you say, “What will they think of next?” or “Power to the people!” with the pun intended.  Pretty cool idea to make a wind turbine off of $300 in parts and some time.  I’m tempted to try this one of these years but it will have to wait until we have a house.  Something tell me the apartment complex might complain if I were to start propping windmills on the deck.

But giving people the ideas to develop their own devices will be huge.  Not only do you get to set your hand to freeing yourself from 100% reliance on the electrical grid, but you get to do it yourself.  Not just by dropping a few grand and having someone set it up for you.  And it is a good start towards bigger an better things.

If you’re into it, you should also check into the OScar open source automobile initiative.

It only makes sense.  Flickr for photos, YouTube for video.  And Teapotters for 3D artists.  Pretty nice.  Slow interface, but the eventual repository will be very valuable for those with limited access to good 3D software.
